Robin Parker, Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Chells Division, has arranged for a long stretch of footway alongside Chells Way to be re-surfaced and made safer.
The section concerned is from the junction of Chells Way with Warwick Road up to the junction of Chells Way with Harvey Road. The work was funded from Councillor Parker's Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) Highways Locality Budget (HLB).
Councillor Parker said “I chose this section of footway – near Camps Hill School - to be done next because it is old (vintage 1959, I believe) and it is very well used by pedestrians. Many users may be youngsters, but there are also considerable numbers who are elderly and possibly less mobile, and for whom uneven, broken slabs are a trip hazard.”
“Each year I try to find the funds from my HLB to improve some old, dangerous footways in Chells from slabs to safer Bitmac. But with present levels of funding allowed to me by HCC, it will take many years to get round to them all!”
The work involved removing old, cracked and uneven slabs and re-surfacing with a new Bitmac, which is flat and smooth. Also, a few small sections were changed to new verge. The work was completed ahead of schedule, on 19 November 2021, by contractors Ringway, working for HCC Highways.
