As the Opposition Spokesperson on Education (Liberal Democrats) at Herts. County Council, Mark Watkin writes an open letter to Tery Douris (Conservative Portfolio Holder at HCC):
In the few days since our County Council meeting, the world has moved on, though sadly not the Conservative Government.
In light of their refusal to support Marcus Rashford's proposal to introduce free school meal vouchers over school holidays, I am asking you to seek the agreement of David Williams that Hertfordshire joins with other Conservative run Councils such as Kensington and Chelsea, Staffordshire and Essex in setting up a system for delivering free school meals during the school holidays at least up to and including Easter 2021.
You will be aware that voluntary groups and at least one of the Districts are working to fill this gap, and they are to be commended for this, but only the County Council has the resources and power to ensure that every child in the County eligible to receive free school meals will be supported.
I look forward to your early response to this pressing need.
